Team of the Year - Holymead Girls' Football Team

We are very proud to announce that the Holymead Girls' Football Team won the Team of the Year Award for Outstanding Values at the annual Ashton Park Spots Partnership Awards Evening. The team were represented by Lucy, Astrid and Yasmin and were presented with their award by England netball star and Commonwealth Gold medallist Eboni Beckford Chambers.

This is a fantastic achievement for the team and for our whole school, reflecting the work around Rights Respecting Schools that tales place from Reception through to Year 6. Well done to everyone involved.

Details of our nomination are as follows:

We believe that the Holymead Girls’ Football Team would be worthy recipients of the Team of the Year – Values award. Throughout the year, in both training and in matches, the team have displayed outstanding teamwork, commitment, respect and resilience. However, it is for their unwavering integrity that we are most proud of them. This was exemplified in the team’s last group match of the South Bristol Sports Centre tournament. Up until this point the team had won 5 matches, drawing 1 and losing 0 and had not conceded a goal. A place in the final was in sight if they could avoid defeat in their final match. With the scores locked at 0-0 in a very tight game, against a very good team in West Town Lane, the referee awarded our opponents a corner kick. As the ball went out of play from the ensuing corner the referee this time awarded a goal kick to Holymead. At this point one of our players, Lucy, did not hesitate in telling the referee that she had actually kicked the ball out and that the correct decision should be another corner kick to West Town Lane. This time we were unable to defend the corner and West Town Lane scored. The match ended 1-0; this result meant we missed out on a place in the final on goal difference. The team were disappointed but they were unanimous in their support of Lucy; for them Lucy’s honesty was just the right thing to do. West Town Lane went on to win the final and were worthy champions. They had performed excellently throughout and their success was well deserved. As for Holymead, we are exceptionally proud of Lucy’s actions in ensuring fair play. We are equally proud of the way her team mates were unequivocal in their support of Lucy; as I mentioned earlier they viewed it as simply the right thing to do. An outstanding example of integrity.
