The pictures above will give you a glimpse of what life is like at Holymead Primary School. To find out more please take a look at our Curriculum Overview below.

School Admission

If you are considering Holymead Primary for your child and would like to have a look around please call the school office on either 0117 3772381 or 0117 9030377. We will be delighted to arrange an appointment to show you around our school.

To apply for a place at Holymead Primary School

Bristol City Council are responsible for the entire admissions process. Our school admin team will be able to advise you on who to contact and when. However, please be aware that we have no influence over how places are allocated.

In order to meet the needs of the children already on roll, teaching and learning spaces need to be used flexibly and for a variety of purposes. Therefore Holymead Primary School Governors have determined that the maximum class size will be 30 children to enable the most effective teaching and learning to take place.

11.6.20

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am writing to update you on what is happening in school. As you are aware things are changing quickly with the government making daily announcements. In education we are having to respond rapidly to the information we are given. You will probably have heard that the government’s plan for all children to return before the summer holidays has now been dropped which has no doubt left parents and carers with children in Y2-Y5 (and those self-isolating and shielding) worried about what is happening for your children. I don’t have an easy answer but we are doing all we can to continue to support you in Home Learning.

I would like to explain that now we have YR, Y1 and Y6 returning, coupled with an increasing cohort of Key Worker children we are actually operating at full capacity with all our class rooms, playground spaces and all our staff fully time-tabled. We have a little more capacity allocated for more Key Workers but what I need to be clear about is that teacher and LSA time is even more limited than it has been so please don’t expect an increase in online learning. Teachers and LSAs are all teaching in different year groups as well as YR, Y1 and Y6 teaching their own classes.

Blended Learning

Our plan going forward is to use teachers who are shielding and self-isolating to carry on posting online materials in the same way as now so please continue to use the year group pages, the blog, TT Rockstars or Numbots (Y1) and Tapestry (YR). Other teachers, who may only be in class part time will also continue with Home Learning but it may well be reduced, especially for those year groups who have returned to school.

We are therefore looking at trying to do things slightly differently and are exploring new ideas. Mr Jones has taken to Twitter to see what’s out there and had 1700 responses for teachers about what they are doing. Only 7% (most of which were secondary teachers) say they stream the teaching of lessons. These are fraught with safeguarding issues and reading the responses from teachers who are doing it they were clear it was not having the positive impact they thought it would. We have also looked at learning platforms and don’t think they serve our needs any better than the blog we already have. From looking at what other teachers (locally and nationally) are recommending, we are going to trial two new strategies to support the online learning that we are already offering.

Zoom

Parents and carers have told us that what their children miss most is the contact with their friends and teachers. We are therefore developing our use of Zoom to trial small group meetings of 8-10 classmates to have a discussion or PSHC session with their teacher or an LSA. As we will do this through the adult’s email contact we are assuming consent for your child to participate because you have let them join. We will of course expect children to follow normal classroom behaviour expectations. Children who misbehave will not be able to continue in the meeting. However, I’m hopeful this won’t be an issue at Holymead!

Loom

We are also trialling Loom which enables teachers to use their power points and Smart Note Books to create a learning tool. This is a much more Key Stage 2 approach. The teacher will talk your child through the lesson/power point and you can see them in the corner of the presentation. Your child can pause this and go back over things they don’t understand. We think this will have more of a feel of a lesson and create positive contact with your teacher. These power points will be posted on the usual year group pages but please be aware that they will only be available for a few lessons. We are having a few technical issues with using Loom in school but hopefully these will be resolved soon. Mr Jones has prepared one which is on the website if you would like to take a look. This is one that children in Y3-Y6 might like to try: http://www.holymeadp.bristol.sch.uk/web

Online teaching and resources

We recommend, if you need supplementary learning, that you look at the lessons and learning on:

Oak Academy https://classroom.thenational.academy/year-groups/

BBC Bitesize https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons

These have been made specifically to meet this need. These establishments were given funding and resources to be able to do this. It is not something we have the resources to replicate.

For those who are not online, where we know of this, and for pupil premium children we will be ordering a second wave of workbooks. Please note this depends on the availability of books and also staff to deliver them as they are now working in school.

We hope you are able to join us in these new opportunities. Please bear with us if it takes time, we are going as fast as we can!

Keep safe and well!

Yours sincerely,

Ms Slatcher

Head teacher
