 Mathematics Intent Statement

Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?

The intent of Mathematics at Holymead is to teach the National Curriculum in a way which is accessible to all and will help every child maximise their achievement using their individual talents and abilities.

At Holymead Primary School we teach Mathematics using the NCETM’s 5 Big Ideas for “Teaching for Mastery” in Mathematics:

  • representation and structure
  • mathematical thinking
  • fluency
  • variation
  • small, coherent steps

New mathematical concepts are introduced using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach; enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new topics which allows them to have clear models and images to aid their understanding. We recognise the importance of arithmetic and basic math skills so these are practised daily to ensure key mathematical concepts are embedded and children can recall this information to see the links between topics in Maths.

As a result of this, children learn to recall number facts, solve problems, think and reason logically, make connections, recognise patterns and work systematically and accurately. We believe all children can achieve in mathematics and we teach for a secure and deep understanding.
