Children need their bookbag in school each day and they should be reading at least 3 times a week at home.

Spelling tests and times table tests are done on Fridays.
In Year 2, children are expected to:

  • Read their reading book to an adult. We recommend at least 3 times per week for approximately 10-20 minutes on each occasion

  • Read their shared reading book. This is a book that an adult reads to their child. Comprehension questions and vocabulary are encouraged as discussion points

  • Children are expected to play Numbots and Times Table Rock Stars at least three times a week for 10 minutes (We will be introducing Times Tables Rock Stars later in the term)

  • Complete topic projects which will be set termly (3 per year)

  • Learn spellings which will be tested each Friday. Spellings can be found in your child's blue spelling test book which must stay in your child's book bag

  • Optional tasks will be provided which link with learning from the term

We follow 'No Nonsense Spelling' to support our teaching of spelling in Year 2. We also use 'Unlocking Letters and Sounds' to support our revision of phonics.
This is our current overview for phonics in Year 2 at the moment.
Please find resources to support you with your child's learning below.
Children's login details for Numbots and Times Table Rockstars can be found in their reading record. If you cannot find them, please ask your child's class teacher.
On Tuesday, Tiger Class enjoyed a visit from a cricket coach.  We learnt a new game and had a go at batting and fielding.  It was great fun!
Today we had "Encounter Christianity" in to run a workshop all about Christmas. It was lots of fun.
This week we visited St. Luke's church. Sue introduced herself to us and then we got to explore!
We recently had an author visit our school and talk to the Year 2 pupils. Nikesha Shukla has written the book 'The Council of Good Friends' which we enjoyed hearing an extract of.
We were extremely lucky to have Olympian Natalie Powell visit Holymead. She did an assembly telling pupils all about her judo achievements and the children took part in a fitness circuit task too.
As part of our Geography work, we went on a local walk around Brislington looking at a map and exploring all the different features of the area.
